Course Name: Business English – Credit 1.0

Description: In this course, students will develop communication skills that contribute to success in the business world. Correct grammar, usage, punctuation, and formatting in business correspondence are emphasized. Students will also study and practice effective public speaking techniques. Finally, they will learn about research methods and write a research paper which advocates a position on a controversial issue.

In-person meeting time: Tuesdays from 10 a.m. to noon

Course Name: Principles of Writing – Credit 1.0

Description: Emphasis in this course will be on learning to write clearly, correctly, and effectively. Students will participate in the entire writing process, including, planning, composition, and editing. Assignments include expository essays, argumentative essays, and creative writing.

Course Name: Reading and Writing SAT Tests Prep – Non-Credit

Description: Scores for the SAT Reading Test and the SAT Writing and Language Test are combined into one score based on a possible 800 points.

The prep class for the SAT Reading Test will focus on sharpening the active reading skills that enable students first to master the facts and details of a passage and then to explore the author’s purpose, perspective, point of view, and tone. As their skills improve, students will learn to draw accurate inferences based on information and evidence in the passage.

On one level, prep for the Writing and Language Test will focus on correct use of language as reflected in grammar, conventions of usage, and punctuation. On another level, it will address organization and logical development of ideas in written passages.

This course is designed to help students maximize their scores on the SAT Reading and Writing tests. In addition, it will emphasize and complement the reading and writing skills that students have worked to develop throughout their schooling. The desired result is not only higher SAT scores but also better preparation for the challenges of a college education and a professional career.
